Our rental vehicles require different driver's license categories depending on the vehicle type, gross weight, and number of seats. Here is a simple overview to help you quickly determine which vehicle is compatible with your driver's license.
| Category | Suitable for |
|---|---|
| B | For vehicles weighing up to 3.5 metric tons and with a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver. |
| BE | For passenger cars towing heavier trailers. |
| C1 | For vehicles weighing more than 3.5 metric tons and with a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver. |
| D1 (Code 106) 3.5 metric tons | Unlimited seating and a maximum of 3.5 metric tons (special case for older driver's licenses) |
| D1 (Code 106) | Up to 3.5 metric tons: unlimited seating capacity; over 3.5 metric tons: max. 17 seats. |
| D1 | For minibuses weighing more than 3.5 metric tons with 9 to 17 seats, including the driver. |
| D | For buses with more than 17 seats, including the driver. |
The key factors are always the entry on your driver’s license, the gross vehicle weight rating, the number of seats, and—for travel trailers—the combination of the towing vehicle and the trailer. If you’re unsure, we’d be happy to work with you to determine which rental vehicle fits your category.
For many motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 metric tons, a Class B license is sufficient. For larger motorhomes weighing more than 3.5 metric tons, a Class C1 license is required. The decisive factor is always the gross vehicle weight as stated on the vehicle registration certificate.
A D1 license is required for buses with more than 9 and no more than 17 seats, including the driver's seat.
Category D is required for larger buses with more than 17 seats, including the driver's seat.
Yes, for professional driving involving vehicles in categories D1 or D, the CZV proficiency certificate may also be required. This applies in particular to commercial passenger transport.
We'd be happy to advise you and help you find the right rental car for your driver's license category.
