The required driver's license depends on the number of seats. Midibuses with up to 17 seats may generally be driven with a Category D1 license. For vehicles with more than 17 seats, a Category D license is required.
Depending on the vehicle and configuration, midibuses offer 17 to 21 seats. When used as school buses—depending on the model—they can even accommodate up to 33 seats. Many vehicles can also be equipped with quick-release systems. This makes it easy to remove or install seats as needed and allows the seating configuration to be flexibly adapted to different purposes—for example, to create more luggage space, accommodate wheelchair users, or carry fewer passengers.
The biggest difference lies in the gross vehicle weight rating and the vehicle category. Minibuses are generally classified as M2 vehicles with a weight rating of up to 5 metric tons, while midibuses belong to the M3 category with a weight rating exceeding 5 metric tons. As a result, midibuses offer more seats, a larger luggage capacity, and more options for comfort and special equipment. They are particularly well-suited for professional passenger transport, tour services, and scheduled bus routes.
